We worked closely with Paul and Bev who were keen on using various materials and plants to create their perfect garden to entertain friends. The whole garden was stripped to provide raised decking, a slate water feature, stepping stones, lawn edging and a BBQ area with the important bottle opener fixed to the wall.

November 2004 saw the transformation of this garden. Using many different materials there is always something different to see. There is the 26 foot stream, the over-hanging decking and subtle lighting creating more interest when the sun goes down. George and Judith have now completed the planting during 2005 bringing even more interest along with new wildlife.

There are numerous other projects not included on this website. Here are a few pictures to prompt some thoughts and ideas for your own garden.

The start of this project saw us clearing a mass of weeds and unwanted plants. The large number of beds are now easily manageable with the majority of shrubs being evergreen, giving colour all year round. In addition there are large areas of spirea that provide a colourful display during the summer months. Hundreds of Cornus Alba (Dogwood) plants providing colour during the winter months.

Paul wanted a very formal garden split into three distinct areas. Furthest from the house is an area of raised beds for vegetable growing. The middle section provides a selection of random paths and informal planting. Through the arch is a patio area complete with structured planting. The use of various materials and plants brings structure and interest to what was an unkempt garden.

A new house with a mud patch for a back garden. This was transformed using curves on the patios, a half moon seating area, a raised BBQ area, paths to join it all together and new turf to complete the job. Stewart said: “Just a short note to thank you and John for the tremendous work you did for Shelley and I here in Heybridge.   We are really happy with the finished article and look forward to spending many happy hours in our 'designer' garden.“

A new house with nothing in the garden The garden was transformed with 3 patios areas, a pergola, new turf and the path renewed. In addition selected planting for low maintenance. Plants included verbena bonariensis, honeysuckle, clematis, ceanothus, escallonia along with daffodils, tulips and primula. The garden will develop and mature over the years.

Peter bought some land behind his house and decided it would be a good idea to have a five-a-side football pitch for his son and a little putting green for himself. After the removal of rubble and rubbish the area was rotavated, leveled and 1100 square metres of turf was laid.

Anne has used BGS on several occasions and worked with us on the design in the front garden of her Victorian house where a formal layout was required. Different levels of brick work give an interesting feel to the garden. Anne carefully chose the materials using different types of slate.

Cathy had a designer produce a very special garden design. Due to the shape of the plot the patio was set at an angle to the house leading your eye to the end of the garden. Various materials compliment each other and provide interest wherever you stand in the garden. The utility area is concealed behind trellis and a low deck provides access to the hot tub.

This was a garden where shrubs and trees had taken over. A massive clearance was needed before the re-building could begin. The main components consisted of a circular sandstone patio with edging setts, wooden stakes creating a raised bed and the raised brick bed with a wooden seat on the front curved edge. In addition a new lawn was laid, bark mulch was used to create a child friendly area and a secret path behind the trees at the rear of the garden. The last touch was to plant the garden adding colour and scent.

Julie and Paul wanted a complete new garden. A combination of Indian sandstone and decking was laid to add interest in the patio area. A pergola spans the back of the house and a deck path leads to the gate taking you to the new lawn.  Round the corner is a curved patio area that will catch the sun on a summers evening. In addition there is the sound of the slate water feature. New plants complete the garden for the years to come.

The garden was in a poor state when we started. A good clearance gave us the basis to start from. Decking was installed along with a pailing fence to keep her dogs off the grass. All the borders were cleared of weeds and a good layer of mulch was added to retain moisture and keep the weeds down. A vegetable patch was created just in front of the deck in an ideal location to capture the heat of the sun in this south facing garden. To provide some screening at the back, two 4 metre  Photinia red robins were planted.

Karen, Maldon

After having a conservatory built it was time to look at the garden. Indian sandstone paving was laid with a sweeping curve at the front. In addition sandstone setts were laid along the grass edge. Around the corner a wooden seating area was constructed where hours will be spent relaxing on those warm summer evenings. There are plant holders in the corners of the seat, ideal for scented plants like lavender or rosemary.
